The Best Artisan Gelato in Milan, Italy

Although the scenery is gorgeous, many people visit Italy for the food. You can’t top Italy’s amazing gelato on a hot summer day, or any time of year as an after-dinner treat. Fortunately, Milan has plenty of amazing gelato sprinkled throughout the city. Lucky for you, I’ve sacrificed and tasted a lot of gelato so I could compile a list of some of the best for you to enjoy!

Artico - Via Porro Lambertenghi, 15

Artico is one really good gelato store (that also recently opened another location in the Duomo area). This is gelato with quality you can taste and flavors that change with the season. This gelateria manages to stay open and busy even in the wintertime. They also offer a gelato/gelateria making class. Last time I checked it was around 1,500€ for a six-week course. Just in case you have gelato-making in your future.

Avgvsto - Viale Coni Zugna, 54

This award-winning gelataria makes high-quality artisanal gelato. Although the gelato is enough for this place to stand out on its own, the store is also in a cute-country chic setting. Avgvsto also functions as a cafe, so it’s one of the few places that actually has sit-in space. With delicious flavors and a lovely ambiance, it’s a great place to spend an afternoon.

Ciacco - Via Spadari, 13

If you’re in the Duomo/Cadorna area, make sure you try Ciacco. This artisan gelateria is located on the Milanese street synonymous with quality food Via Spadari. Here you have small-batch gelato made with all-natural flavors that change with the seasons. I’d also like to note that the fruit flavors are vegan (so lactose-free) and 100% natural. The Bronte Pistachio, Gianduja with organic chocolate, and the Piedmont Hazelnut flavors contain only natural unrefined sugar.

Gelateria KM Zero - Piazzale di Porta Lodovica, 6

Opened back in 2015, this 100% certified organic gelateriasources their ingredients from local farms. Accordingly, you’ll only get seasonal flavors that change according to the time of year.

Gelato Giusto - Via S. Gregorio, 17

This is what happens when a woman who has worked with some of the most renowned pastry shops and chocolatiers in the world decides to open a gelateria. Vittoria’s gelatois produced fresh each and every day. I think it goes without saying that they are made with only natural ingredients, high-quality milk and cream, and seasonal fruits. During the colder months, you can also stop by Gelato Giusto for some chocolate treats.

Gelateria della Musica - Via Pestalozzi, 4

There is usually a line out the door to get into this gelateria. This gelato shop is known for its superbly creamy gelato (creamier than most gelato) as well as their ability to successfully produce unique combinations. Some of their signature “different” flavors include basil and lemon and bread and jam.

Gnomo del Gelato - Via Francesco Cherubini, 3

This is another creamy gelato made with quality ingredients. I also like the fact that they usually have one or two surprising flavor combinations just to change it up a little.

Il Massimo del Gelato - Via Lodovico Castelvetro, 18

This gelato is sooooo sooo sooo sooo sooo good. I could go on about the quality ingredients, how they make fresh batches throughout the day, etc etc etc. But really you just need to go and try it. Oh, for you chocolate lovers they do have like 10 different flavors of chocolate gelato. (This gelateria is arguably the best of the best…)

Latte Neve - Vai Vigevano, 27

My husband Diego affectionately calls the owner of Latte Neve il maestro, or the master. There’s a conviction and passion in his eyes that guaranteed Latte Neve’s spot, in our minds, as one of the best ice-cream shops in Milan. How would I describe Latte Neve’s gelato? Classic flavors with a twist. They serve several different types of chocolate ice-creams with assorted percentages of cacao, originating in various parts of the world. They also have a good selection of dairy-free and vegan gelato and sorbets.

Rigoletto - Via S. Siro, 2

This gelateria is very reminiscent of what gelato shops used to look like in Italy. You won’t find a sleek décor or any fancy signs. But what you will find is a simple good product, made like all other places I’ve mentioned, with quality ingredients. The fruit flavors are all dairy-free/lactose. Plus at 2.50 for a two flavor cone, it’s also cheaper than lots of the gelaterias in town, including some that have yucky synthetic ingredients.

Rivareno - Via Mercato, 20

How many times did I pass in front of Rivareno without ever going in? I think it's because the super modern décor never really drew me in. I mean, it's all white and gray. That said the gelato is delicious. For example, the fruit flavors are all made with at least 55% fruit. The flavors change with the seasons like any good gelateria should do. Specifically, the last time I was there, the pine nut gelato had beautifully crunchy and long pieces of Italian pine nuts.

Have you tried any of these? What do you think? Let me know in the comments below.
